Morning Commute, 8:10 A.M. East 72nd Street
09-11-01
While on my way across town on the morning of September 11, 2001, I caught this image of New Yorkers waiting for a bus. It was a fine late-summer day, dawning clear and mild. Since the previous year, I had been including the dates of my black-and-white photographs in their titles. Most dates carry no intrinsic weight, but 09-11-01 obviously has significance far beyond what I expected when I made the exposure. I think of this image as the eeriest I've ever made, because of the normalcy it conveys, a normalcy that would be extinguished within minutes.
