Fifth Avenue, 10:10 A.M.
09-11-01

I could see the towers burning from my office. I could not get through to my wife by telephone and headed uptown to find her. By the time I reached Fifth Avenue, the South Tower had fallen. We were all standing on the street, strangers held together in clusters by news reports sounding from the radios of parked vehicles. We could see the North Tower burning, at the far end of the avenue. The pose of the woman at the far left is all too recognizable from the figure in The Scream of Edvard Munch.
